Of Time and Turtles

turtle in Hoan Kiem LakeI heard this fascinating story on NPR today–about the giant turtle living in Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi. I’ve seen him before, most recently on cryptomundo.com. The turtle is believed to be hundreds of years old, and the possibly the last of his (or her) kind. He’s highly revered by the people there, and rightly so, in my opinion.

Anyway, listening to the story about this turtle got me to thinking…I can’t escape the feeling that the world we live in is moving, or more likely has moved, out of one Great Age and into another. Animals like this turtle are the last relics of a time we’ll never see again, and once their slow, regal procession has passed, our world will be a poorer place.

Oops, by proxy.

You know something bad has probably happened when you hear a crash, a brief silence, then Kid Number One telling Kid Number Two to “go tell Dad I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to break it.”

In this case, everything was fine, and it made for a pretty funny moment.
